Getting humbled, one way or another

Prodigious Powder, Season 2 February 5, 2012

This is the second season of my campaign to replace the word “epic” with the word “prodigious” in ski/snowboard vernacular. The e-word has been growing in popularity the last few years to where now, just about anything can be “EPIC.” Forget that its actual intent is to describe things of heroic or grand scale.

Odysseus is allowed to use this word.

Joe Schmo is not allowed to use this word when talking about a burrito.

While powder days are some of the most fun moments in life, still….not epic. Unless you have a powder day that lasts for 10 years, requires the survival of several massive avalanches and jumping crevasses that have monsters that try to snatch you and drag you in. All while trying to save an entire mountain town from total annihilation. I suppose that would be pretty epic.

Prodigious is a much better fit. Especially this season since it refers to abnormal happenings. With storms less frequent than typical, a powder day is prodigious indeed. Here are some pictures from a few I’ve been blessed to enjoy recently.

This wasn’t a powder day, but the other night a few of us hiked up Powderhorn under a nearly full moon and enjoyed some night skiing.

I went out with the boys yesterday to get the “scraps” from the last storm. Just happens that the scraps were 18+” deep. Sweet!

The four of us rode a snowmobile up one of our ski runs at 8am, then started hiking out. The benefit of the Grand Mesa being a mesa is that the hiking was nice and flat. I just scooted along on my skis. My triceps did get an awesome workout. If I keep that up I’ll have some odd looking arms.

We dropped in on a big untouched glade with a beautiful view. Here are the scraps of the pictures I took. The good stuff is saved for PH marketing purposes.

It’s really fun when you’re skiing snow so deep it hits you in the face with every turn. I don’t know why. It’s just addicting. At least it’s the good kind of white powder substance to be addicted to.

Powderhorn got a surprise 14″ last night. Guess who was on first chair? This girl. The job does have its benefits!

It’s called Powderhorn for a reason. Thankfully the Good Lord loves his snow and is choosing to bless the Grand Mesa right now. We went 3 weeks without any snow and that whole spell was getting pretty old.

I was in Denver last week for work and it was 55 degrees and very little snow on the front range. I couldn’t help think along the lines of Dumb & Dumber– I thought the Rocky Mountains would be a lot…snowier…than this.

So far this week we’ve had 25″ of snow with hopefully a little more tonight. Here’s a couple shots we got today.
